Unakka Chemmeen Chakkakuru Manga Curry / Dried Shrimps with Jackfruit Seeds and Mango

Ingredients

1. Dried Shrimps - 1 cup
2. Jackfruit seeds / Chakkakuru - 15 to 20, peeled and cut lengthwise
3. Raw Mango - 1, cut lengthwise
4. Drumsticks - 2, peeled and cut into 2" pieces
5. Grated Coconut - 1/2 of one coconut
6. Shallots - 8 to 10
7. Chilli Powder - 2 tsp
8. Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp
9. Cumin Seeds - A pinch
10. Dry Red Chillies - 4
11. Mustard seeds - 1/2 tsp
12. Curry Leaves - 2 sprigs
13. Salt - As required
14. Coconut Oil - As required
15. Water - As required

Method

1. In a mixer, grind together coconut, 3 shallots, chilli powder, turmeric powder, cumin seeds by adding little water. Keep it aside.
2. Cook the jackfruit seeds in a pressure cooker by adding little water and salt. Cooking till one whistle will be enough. Keep it aside.
3. Dry roast the shrimps in a medium flame for 1 minute. Keep it aside.
4. In a vessel, add jackfruit seeds, mango, drumsticks and water. Let it boil.
5. When it boils, add the ground paste, salt and little more water.
6. Cook till the shrimps are done. Keep it aside
7. Heat some oil in a kadai and splutter the mustard seeds.
8. Add shallots, curry leaves and dry red chillies.
9. Stir and cook till the shallots turn light brown in color.
10. Now, add this tempering to the curry.
11. The curry is ready to serve. It goes well with rice and idiyappam.

Tips

  1. Use mango that is sour as it gives the dish a special taste.
