Jeera Rice, is a very popular dish in North India and Pakistan. Some people call it Jeera Pulao or Zeera Rice. As the name indicates, the main ingredient next to rice is Jeera or Cumin (Jeerakam in Malayalam). Cumin seeds not only add taste to food but also it is very beneficial for our body. So in fact, this dish turns out to be healthy (provided only limited quantity of ghee is added). :)
Ingredients
1. Basmati Rice - 1 and 1/2 cup
2. Onion - 1 medium sized, finely sliced
3. Jeerakam (Jeera) / Cumin Seeds - 1 and 1/2 tsp
4. Grambu / Cloves - 2 nos
5. Karugapatta / Cinnamon Stick - 1 inch piece
4. Ghee - 1 tbsp
5. Water -3 cups
6. Salt- As per taste
Method
1. Wash and soak the rice for 20 minutes. Drain them and keep it aside.
2. Heat ghee in a pressure cooker. Splatter the cumin seeds.
4. Add cloves and cinnamon stick. Saute it for few seconds.
3. Now add the onion and saute well.
4. When the onion starts changing it's color, add the rice and fry for 1 minute.
5. Add 3 cups of water or till water level is just above the rice. Add salt to taste.
6. Pressure cook them in high flame for 2-3 minutes. Then reduce the flame to low. Cook for another 1 minutes. Switch off the flame.
7. Open the lid only after the pressure is completely gone.
8. Garnish it with fried onion(optional). And, yes! Jeera rice is ready to serve. :)
Jeera rice goes well with any curries. We served it with Chilly Paneer, which is actually an Indo-Chinese dish.
